Newsletter 01  -  Spring 2005

Dear Parents

A Happy New year to you  from all at school.  I hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and thank you once again for the cards and gifts; you are very generous.  The children have returned “raring to go”, so I need to highlight a few events early in the term.

Non-Uniform Day and Karaoke Event- Friday 14th January

In view of the recent tragic events in SE Asia, the County Council have suggested a non-uniform day across the County on Friday the 14th January in exchange for a donation (money) for the appeal.  We also thought we would repeat the Lepra fundraising idea from a couple of years ago, whereby children pay 50p to sing a song (karaoke).  If the children could come to school in their preferred clothes for the day with a donation, and 50p if they wish to sing a song in the afternoon.

Uniform

Thank you for sending the children back to school dressed so smartly, also, with school shoes rather than trainers.  As stated previously this makes a real difference to how they feel about being part of the school community and about the standards they are expected to keep up in terms of appearance.

PE Kit/ Swimming

Would you be kind enough to ensure that your child has full PE kit for physical activities and that they have suitable footwear, which fits well?  Children seem to grow out of plimsolls/daps very quickly.  Years 3 & 4 will continue to swim at Wincanton for the next few weeks.  We will notify you when the next group are due to go.

Photographs/ Website

From time to time photographs are taken for the local press, publications, county training or our school website.   If you are unhappy about your child’s picture being used in this way would you please inform the school office so that we are aware and can assure you that your child will not appear in anything against your wishes.

Bad Weather

So far the weather has been quite kind to us, but may I remind you of what will happen in the highly unlikely event that the school will have to be closed:

If the decision is made not to open school as a result of deteriorating conditions overnight, a notice will be put up outside school as early as possible to tell you school is closed.  The school telephone will be staffed from 8.20 am ‑10.00 am so that enquiries can be made, and again from 3.00 pm ‑ 4.30 pm.

If worsening weather conditions indicate that by 3.30 pm children and staff may have difficulty getting home, every attempt will be made to contact you to ask you to come and collect your children from school.

If you anticipate difficulties collecting your children later in the day due to weather conditions, please come early and collect children from school or telephone us to let us know what arrangement to make.

The Head teacher, Deputy Head teacher or other authorised person will remain at school until all children have been safely collected.

Local radio will be notified and information will be broadcast on:

Orchard FM                  102.6 (FM)

Gold Radio                    97.4 (FM)

Theatre Trip

We have organised a whole school Theatre Trip to see The Borrowers at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil on Tuesday 1st February 2005.  The Friends of Abbas and Templecombe have agreed to part fund the trip in view of their excellent and well supported fund raising events over the last year.  Also, we will use the commission gained from the school photographer to complete the expenditure, therefore there will be no charge for this wonderful opportunity.   More details will be available nearer the time.

Attendance

I know that you are all aware of the importance of attendance at school and the new measures for reporting and dealing with poor attendance, therefore could I ask you to be mindful of this throughout the next two terms and ensure that your child comes to school every day unless there is illness or agreed time off.  If your child regularly suffers from minor ailments that mean that they miss school regularly it might be worth seeking medical help.

We still have a supply of school tea towels, illustrated by the children and on sale at the Christmas bazaar.
