Newsletter 03 – Summer Term 2006

Dear Parents

Year 6 (Topaz Class) are really enjoying their residential to Hayling Island and will return today following 3 days packed with activities such as abseiling, climbing, fencing etc.

Ruby class were very excited about their visit to the Bath and West Showground for the 999 Life skills day, which included lively exhibits and displays related to Health and Safety and the emergency services.

Years 3/4/5 also spent a very enjoyable day at King Arthur’s for the “TopLink” festival, where King Arthur’s  students organised activities for primary children in the local area.

Some Yr 6 pupils took part in an orienteering day recently at Montacute House and did really well.  We are hoping to extend this skill to other classes.  Well done to Matthew Lavender, Thomas Flagg, Elliot Abbott, Ethan Taylor, Harriet Moore, Libby Woolacott, Leanna Salter, Aaron Gray and Nathan Miller.

Please see the list at the end of this letter for other events and activities this term.

Crossing Patrol

We still haven’t been able to recruit a replacement member of staff to fulfil the crossing patrol duties.  Mrs Tracey Ballard leaves at the end of term, therefore please be aware that if we cannot recruit it would not be advisable to allow even older children to cross the road without adult supervision.  If anyone is interested would you please contact the school office.

Also if you would like to contribute to a gift for Tracey to thank her for her work at the school, please send money in a clearly marked envelope.

A reminder that we will also be making a presentation to Mrs Jane Rosser at the end of term.

Protecting Young Minds

A plea to all to continue to monitor carefully which programmes your children watch on television.  Increasingly there appears to be very unsuitable programmes on before the 9.00pm watershed and I know that you too are surprised and shocked by the liberal use of bad language and behaviour on television.  Children are very impressionable and I know that you will agree that we wish to protect our children from inappropriate language and behaviour so that they are allowed to be children for as long as possible.  Use of bad language and poor behaviour is taken very seriously at school, as I am sure it is at home.  Many thanks for your support.

Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Coins

The Friends of the school have purchased a Queen Elizabeth II birthday medal for all pupils.  This will be a great memento for the future.  Thank you to the Friends.

Walk to School Wednesday

A reminder about the Walk to School Wednesday on 21st June.  Children have been reminded why this event takes place.  Please see Mrs Geary if you have any queries about the arrangements.

Summer Fete – Saturday 24th June

Non uniform day – Wednesday 21st June.  Children can leave their uniform at home for the day in return for a tombola or raffle prize e.g chocolates, wine, bubble bath, tinned foods… anything that someone else would like to win.  Please return all raffle tickets and money to school office as soon as possible.  A plate will be sent home on Monday next week so that cakes (homemade or bought) can be returned on Friday/Saturday.  Anyone willing to spare some time to help on a stall?  See Bernie or Sally Geary.  Please join us on the day – fancy dress theme “royalty”.  Cakes – Plants – Bric-a-brac wanted!

Space Day

On Thursday 22nd  June we have organised for a “Space Dome” to visit the school.  This will be a really exciting opportunity for children to learn more about the planets and ‘space’ in general.

Friday 23rd June

We are being visited by Year 5 and 6 pupils from Milborne Port.  Our Year 5 and 6 pupils will engage in many activities including a pupil “French Market”.

St Margarets’ Hospice

We will also be visited by a representative from St Margarets’ Hospice to collect  their cheque of £1218.  The Hospice was amazed that we have raised so much money from such a small school.

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate

We have been approached by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate to have a one day inspection (27th June 2006),  on “Education for Sustainable Development”.  This enables pupils to look at wider issues in their community and indeed the world.  Please let me know if you would like to find out more about this aspect of learning or, indeed, you would like to meet the inspector.

NHS

Height and Weight pupil survey.  A letter regarding the NHS Government initiated survey and return slip will be sent to you shortly.

Times Dates for Next Year

Please find attached a calendar for 2006/2007 academic year with staff training days marked (school closed).

I hope that the contents of this letter are clear, but please do not hesitate to contact me if anything needs further clarification.

If you have any concerns or queries about your child’s education please come to speak to your child’s teacher or myself.

Yours sincerely
